Artificial intelligence is reshaping freelance technology work, creating new opportunities for some professionals while increasing pressure on others whose services overlap with tasks that AI can automate. Recent 2026 data from freelance marketplaces shows that demand is growing for AI-related expertise, while freelancers are also using AI to complete existing work faster.
Demand for AI skills is rising
Upwork reported that demand for skills explicitly connected to artificial intelligence increased 109% year over year in its 2026 In-Demand Skills report. Fast-growing areas included AI video generation and editing, AI integration, AI data annotation and labeling, and AI chatbot development.
Traditional technology skills remain important. Full-stack development, data analytics and other established services continued to attract clients, showing that AI adoption has not removed the need for broader technical expertise.
Upwork’s July 2026 hiring data also showed increased searches for specialized AI roles, including AI developers, AI engineers, AI integration specialists, full-stack AI developers and computer vision engineers.
AI is changing the value of freelance work
Upwork’s Future Workforce Index 2026 found that freelancers performing AI-related work earned 34% more per hour than freelancers who did not incorporate AI. The report also found that the financial impact varied significantly depending on the type and complexity of the work.
Generative AI and creative production contract starts increased 90% year over year, while earnings per contract in that category fell 13%. The figures indicate that rapidly expanding AI-assisted work can also bring greater competition and downward pressure on prices.
More complex AI-augmented professional work showed a different pattern. Upwork reported a 45% year-over-year increase in earnings among freelancers doing complex work with AI.
The platform has described this emerging role as an AI orchestrator: a professional who combines specialist knowledge with AI tools to manage more complex workflows and deliver business outcomes.
Freelancers are adopting AI themselves
Fiverr reported in September 2026 that 76% of surveyed freelancers were already using AI tools in their work. Those freelancers said they saved an average of 8.1 hours each week through AI.
Fiverr also reported increased demand for AI-related freelance services. Searches for prompt engineering rose 76%, while demand for AI automation services increased 136%.
For freelancers, the change can therefore work in two directions. AI can reduce the time needed for research, coding, content production, design and other tasks, but clients may also expect faster delivery and more advanced services as the technology becomes easier to use.
Businesses are looking for specialized talent
Upwork’s 2026 research found that 77% of surveyed business leaders said AI was increasing their need for fractional talent with specialized skills. The finding reflects a shift toward hiring independent professionals for specific technical and AI-related requirements.
Freelancers who can connect AI tools with existing business systems are increasingly working in areas such as automation, software development, data analysis, content production and workflow design.
The impact varies by profession
AI is not affecting every freelance technology role in the same way. Repetitive and lower-complexity tasks face greater exposure to automation, while work requiring specialist knowledge, client communication, judgment and complex implementation remains more dependent on human expertise.
The latest marketplace data shows a freelance market being reorganized rather than simply replaced. AI is creating new categories of work while changing the skills, pricing and productivity expectations attached to established freelance careers.
For tech freelancers, the latest evidence points to an increasingly AI-assisted market in which technical expertise and the ability to work effectively with AI tools are becoming closely connected. Demand continues to develop across both established technology services and newer AI-specific roles.
